Easy Green Gram Sundal recipe

Green gram sundal is one of an easy recipe among the sundal dishes prepared during Navratri festival in Tamil Nadu. This protein packed sundal can be served as a breakfast recipe along with idli or dosa. The sweet version of green gram sundal is also popular among the people. Green gram is soaked in water overnight or for a minimum of 3 hours prior to cooking. Dried red chilies are used for spicy flavour. Asafoetida or Hing, urad dal and freshly grated coconut are the other important ingredients used in this dish. One or two sprigs of curry leaves are also used for a natural flavour. Ingredients used for making Green Gram Sundal
  • 1 cup of Green Gram
  • 3 tablespoons of grated coconut
  • Salt as per the taste
For Tempering
  • 1 teaspoon of Oil
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of Urad dal
  • A pinch of Asafoetida or Hing
  • Few curry leaves

Preparation of Green Gram Sundal
  • Wash the green gram and soak it overnight for 8 hours.
  • Cook the green grams in a pressure cooker for 1-2 whistles.
  • Make sure that the green gram is soft. Once it is cooked, keep it aside.
  • Heat some oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and urad dal.
  • Once it splutters, add the curry leaves and the dry red chilies.
  • Saute this mixture for a minute and add the cooked green gram.
  • Sprinkle some salt for the taste and add the freshly grated coconut.
  • Stir the mixture and saute it for 2-3 minutes.
  • Once it is ready, switch off the flame and transfer the contents to a serving bowl.
  • Serve it hot
