Simple Dal Recipe, Paruppu Kulambu, Parippu curry

Paruppu Kulambu (Simple Dal recipe) is considered to be one of an important dish from South Indian cuisine. This traditional recipe is very much popular with the people from Tamil Nadu. Yellow pigeon or toor dal (Tuvaram Parippu) is the main ingredient in this dish and it goes well with hot steaming rice and ghee. One or two ladles full of dal recipe is served over the hot steaming rice once it is added with a dallop of ghee, then follows the other kootu and kulambu varieties. The yellow texture of this dish comes with the use of dal and is an easily digestible soothing diet. Green chillies are not usually used in this dish, but if you need a spicy flavour you could include green chillies along with the ingredients. Ingredients Used
  • 1 cup of Toor Dal / Split yellow pigeon peas / Thuvaram Parrupu
  • ½ teaspoon of Asafoetida/ Hing / Kayam
  • ¾ inch piece of Ginger (crushed)
  • 3-4 Green chillies, Slit to two pieces (optional)
  • 4-5 cloves of Garlic (crushed)
  • 4 cups of Water
  • 1 teaspoon of Turmeric powder
  • Chopped Coriander leaves
  • 1 tablespoon of Castor Oil
  • Salt as per the taste

Preparation
  • Take the dal in a vessel and wash it well.
  • Transfer it to a pressure cooker and add castor oil, crushed garlic, crushed ginger and the water required for cooking.
  • Pressure cook the ingredients for two to three whistles.
  • Once it is cooked, mash it well with help of masher and add the asafoerida / kayam / hing.
  • Now, add the turmeric powder and chopped coriander leaves.
  • Heat it to a boil and continue it for 10 minutes, once it becomes slightly thicker, add the coriander leaves.
  • Switch off the flame and transfer the recipe to a bowl.
  • Serve it hot with the rice.
