Ingredients required
  • ½ cup of barnyard millet
  • 1½ cup of water
  • 1-2 finely chopped onions
  • 2 tablespoon of finely chopped carrots
  • 3-4 beans (finely sliced)
  • 1 teaspoon of finely chopped ginger
  • 2-3 green chillies (slit to two equal halves)
  • Salt for the taste
  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
  • ¾ teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of urad dal
  • 1 tablespoon of Channa dal
  • A sprig of curry leaves

Method of preparation of Barnyard millet upma
  • Wash the millet in clean water and drain the water.
  • Half cook the millet and keep it aside for later use.
  • Heat some oil in a deep frying pan or Kadai and add the mustard seeds. Wait for it to splutter and add the Urad dal, Channa dal and curry leaves.
  • Saute it for few minutes and add the sliced onion pieces, green chilli and the ginger.
  • Once the onion pieces attain a light transparent texture, add the vegetables like carrot and the beans. Saute it for few minutes.
  • Pour the water and sprinkle some salt for the taste. Mix it really well.
  • Bring it to a boil and add the semi-cooked millet.
  • Cover the lid of the pan, cook it for 8-10 minutes.
  • Once the water dries up, switch off the flame and serve it with chutney.
