Great Visual

These make a breathtaking statement by creating alluring and inviting environments. They are as equally impressive in appearance as they are purveyors of good health; the plants in the walls work as a natural air-filtration system that building occupants can enjoy. Employees are greeted by a green lush environment while savoring the soothing effects of being around an abundance of foliage. An emerging trend in green design, these vertically sprawling gardens of green are springing to life across the world on the exteriors of skyscrapers, in hotel lobbies, office reception areas and more.

Improves Air Quality

They are natural air-filters, creating a cleaner, more invigorating work environment that will lead to better overall employee health and production. Officer workers are often exposed to air toxins in their work environment such as formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, VOCs and benzene. They helps to metabolize harmful toxins while releasing oxygen into the workplace air, much like office plants but on a much larger scale.

Reduces Energy Cost

The interior and exterior living green walls function to cool the air in the warmer summer months by a process known as “Evapotranspiration.” The winter months see the added advantage of building insulation thus reducing energy costs for heating the building. Exterior living green walls can reduce wall surface temperatures by as much as 50 degrees °F, resulting in significant energy savings and air conditioning costs.

Lowers Noise Levels

These structures helps to reduce noise levels in buildings. Plants have been used, throughout the world, to reduce noise along roads and highways. Living green walls expand on this concept as vegetation ‘naturally’ blocks high frequency sounds while the supporting structure can help to diminish low frequency noise. They also act as an extra insulation with a layer of air between the plants and the wall. Reduces noise levels by reflecting, refracting as well as absorbing acoustic energy.

Vertical Gardening System

Most of the indoor vertical garden system has a panel or tray system which is easy to maintain. Panel systems can help you maintain your beautiful vertical gardens on lobby or office walls. For some projects, a tray based system like would be beneficial. This type of system uses polypropylene trays and a water resistant backing board to help the plants stay hydrated. If you don’t have knowledge on this before installing, it can easily fail without proper timely maintenance. Most of the vertical garden systems across the globe has complex irrigation systems which keeps the plants properly watered, although some level of maintenance is often required. Few companies also provide with  monthly maintenance on many different systems.

How does it work ?

These are now the modern day trend in offices and homes. People want plants as decor and when the horizontal space is limited, and vertical spaces are abundant, green walls come in play. Many different green wall technologies exist and new ones are being developed every year. Regardless of what type of green wall system, most green walls have one of two types of irrigation systems:

  1. Recirculating Irrigation
  2. Direct Irrigation

Recirculating Irrigation System

Recirculating Irrigation systems helps recirculates water. In a recirculating system, the source of water is an irrigation tank which is either remote-controlled or directly underneath the green wall. The irrigation tank is filled manually on a regular basis to provide an adequate supply of irrigation water. Water is pumped from the tank to the green wall. Water is distributed to the plants in the wall. Gravity pulls excess water downward. Excess drainage water collects at the bottom of the wall and is fed back to the tank. This water is then used over and over (recirculates).

Direct Irrigation System

Direct Irrigation system does not have a water tank or pump. Instead, irrigation water comes directly from an external water source (i.e. city water). This water is sometimes injected with fertilizer through an injector. A pump is not needed for direct irrigation because of the existing water pressure of the water lines. Water is channeled to the green wall and distributed to the plants of the wall. As water is pulled downward by gravity, any excess irrigation water is collected and sent to a sewer drain (not recirculated).

How is it operated ?

Larger green walls have a direct irrigation system and smaller walls have a recirculating irrigation system, although this can vary. Each system has its advantages and disadvantages. Regardless of the type of irrigation system used, the majority of green walls are operated by a timer or controller. A timer (or controller) tells the irrigation system when to turn on/off, how long to run, and in some cases, where to run. Larger green walls especially are divided into multiple irrigation zones. This allows different parts of the wall to be watered at different rates. For example, some portions of the green wall may need more water than others.

Manual Watering System

There is a third type of irrigation – Manual Watering – where the person caring for the green wall gives water to the green wall system using a water machine, which involves a tank on wheels, or a watering can. Manual watering is usually done with smaller green walls – such as ones that are as small as a big-screen TV or a painting. The benefit of manual irrigation is that electricity and plumbing are not needed.
