Long Pepper (Pippali)
Long Pepper (Pippali) called Indian long pepper (pipli), is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. It has a taste similar to, but hotter than, that of its close relative Piper nigrum – from which black, green and white pepper are obtained.
It is a fragrant plant which has soft stem that climbs on other plants. The branches are thin and hairy. It bears dark green colour leaves which are soft, smooth, glossy, 2-4 inch long and 1-2 inch wide and heart-shaped leaves. They are alternatively arranged and has pointed tips. The leaves have very prominent veins. When unripe the fruit is green and turns light red when ripe and dark dusty when dried. The fruits are also called ‘pippali‘.

If you are suffering from cough, make a remedy out of long pepper, take about 1 to 2 grams of the spice, fry it in a little bit of ghee. Once cool, swallow it whole. You can also mix long pepper and honey and swallow it to relieve sore throat.
Long pepper is said to reduce fever. If you have fever, make a warm bowl of long pepper soup. This can bring down fever and if you have a sore throat, it will also soothe that. It has great antiseptic and antibiotic properties.
