Thengai thogayal or thengai thuvaiyal is a coconut recipe popular among the people from South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Freshly grated coconut pieces, urad dal, tamarind and asafoetida or hing powder are the essential ingredients used in this recipe. The presence of tamarind imparts a slightly sour flavour. Dried red chillies are used for a spicy hot taste and it gives away a light brown texture. Coconut thogayal can be served as a side dish for plain rice, idly, chapatti and pongal recipes. Hot steaming rice, coconut thogayal and small amount of ghee is known to be one of the popular recipe combinations. Freshly prepared vegetable fries and papad chips can also be served with this recipe.
Ingredients used
- ½ cup of freshly grated coconut
- 1 tablespoon of Urad dal
- A pinch of Asafoetida / Hing powder
- 1 teaspoon of Tamarind
- 2-3 dried red chillies
- 1 teaspoon of oil
- Salt for the taste
Method of preparation
- Heat some oil in a pan and add the urad dal and dried red chillies.
- Stir fry the ingredients to a light golden brown texture.
- Now, add the tamarind and the asafoetida / hing powder, fry it for few minutes.
- Also, add the freshly grated coconut pieces.
- Stir the ingredients and saute it till the coconut pieces become slightly brown.
- Transfer the ingredients to a mixer, sprinkle some salt for the taste.
- Grind it to form a lightly brown coloured semi coarse paste.
- Once it is ready, transfer it to a serving bowl.
- Serve it as a side dish for hot rice, rasam and papad.
