9 Lip-Smacking South Indian Pickles You Must Try While Visiting Kerala

South Indian Pickles

It was a pleasant evening at the Taj Lands End, a five star luxury hotel in Mumbai. Being a voracious foodie and a fervent photographer; life was happy and complete. I was sipping over the tantalizing aroma of fresh coffee with an appetizing aroma of sizzling bacon with my high school friend. It was the golden hour at sunset, I quickly grabbed my Sony A7R Mark III. I always carried my tripod with me, for not missing any details.

Now coming back over to my table, amongst all the regional cuisines, I found this one item which suddenly became my focus of attention; talispatri (तालिसपत्री) (the local name in Hindi for the Indian Coffee Plum Pickle) or known as Lubika in Malayalam. My Amma (mother in Malayalam) is from Wayanad, a district in Kerala. While my Dad is a Maharashtrian from Mumbai.

The Taj attracted many discerning visitors from various different parts of South India, who often dumbfound at how the cuisine and the cooking styles change almost every 1000 km. Every region has its own unique cooking style of pickles due to the locally culled ingredients. Pickles were Cleopatra’s prized beauty secrets, they were a dietary staple for Jews living in the Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Russia.

Almost for everyone of us, pickles are deeply rooted in our culture and have that ability for time travel (take back us into the time, where our older generations used to prepare them). I still remember the enormous porcelain jars of mango pickle that would be prepared in the Kalchatti (traditional stoneware cooking vessels). They would be prepared every summer in my mother’s village, set high on the Western Ghats in Wayanad, Kerala. Pickles would be stored either in these vessels (they’re called bharanis in Kerala).
