Ingredients required
- ½ cup of barnyard millet
- 1½ cup of water
- 1-2 finely chopped onions
- 2 tablespoon of finely chopped carrots
- 3-4 beans (finely sliced)
- 1 teaspoon of finely chopped ginger
- 2-3 green chillies (slit to two equal halves)
- Salt for the taste
- 1 tablespoon of coconut oil
- ¾ teaspoon of mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon of urad dal
- 1 tablespoon of Channa dal
- A sprig of curry leaves

Method of preparation of Barnyard millet upma
- Wash the millet in clean water and drain the water.
- Half cook the millet and keep it aside for later use.
- Heat some oil in a deep frying pan or Kadai and add the mustard seeds. Wait for it to splutter and add the Urad dal, Channa dal and curry leaves.
- Saute it for few minutes and add the sliced onion pieces, green chilli and the ginger.
- Once the onion pieces attain a light transparent texture, add the vegetables like carrot and the beans. Saute it for few minutes.
- Pour the water and sprinkle some salt for the taste. Mix it really well.
- Bring it to a boil and add the semi-cooked millet.
- Cover the lid of the pan, cook it for 8-10 minutes.
- Once the water dries up, switch off the flame and serve it with chutney.
