Simple Sambar Sadam Recipe
Sambar Sadam is one of an easy recipe from South Indian cuisine. It’s an easy recipe which uses a distinct combination of vegetables like Tomato, Carrot, Radish and Drumstick. Freshly sliced green chillies and red chilli powder were the reason for a spicy hot taste. Small amounts of tamarind are also used for a slightly sour flavour. As in the case of any other Sambar recipes, the inclusion of asafoetida powder give rise to a unique flavour which combines well with the rest of the spices. Ingredients used for Sambar Sadam Recipe
- ¾ cup of Rice
- 1½ teaspoon of Sambar powder
- ¼ cup of Toor dal
- 12-15 medium sized shallots (finely sliced)
- ½ of a Tomato
- 1-2 medium sized Carrot
- 1 Drumstick (Sliced to small pieces)
- ½ of a Radish
- 1 small lemon sized Tamarind
- 1-2 pinch of Asafoetida powder
- 2 tablespoon + 2 teaspoons of Ghee + Sesame oil
- ¼ teaspoon of Turmeric powder
- ¼ teaspoon of Mustard seeds
- Salt for the taste
Ingredients for grinding
- 1 tablespoon of Channa dal
- 1 medium sized Green chilli
- 2 Red chillies
- ½ teaspoon of Fenugreek seeds / Vendayam
- 1 tablespoon of grated Coconut
- 2-3 Shallots
- ½ of a Tomato

Method of preparation of Sambar Sadam Recipe
- Cook the rice and dal, mash the rice with a ladle or a spatula
- Use a sharp knife and remove the skin of Onions, carrot and radish. Cut carrot and radish into roundels.
- Also, wash the drumstick, peel off its skin and slice it to small sized pieces.
- Heat some oil (few drops) in a frying pan and the ingredients mentioned for grinding and make it into a fine paste.
- Now, in a frying pan heat some sesame oil and add the mustard seeds. Wait for some time as the seeds splutters and add the sliced shallot pieces. Saute it to light brown texture.
- Now, add the chopped tomato pieces and the other veggies. Saute if for few minutes.
- Pour the freshly prepared tamarind extract. (1 cup of tamarind water). Also, add the sambar powder, asafoetida powder, turmeric powder and some salt for the taste.
- Heat it to a boil and cook it in a medium flame so that the vegetables get cooked well.
- Slowly add the grounded paste and the cooked Toor dal, mix it well.
- Heat it to a right consistency, if required you could also add some water for the right consistency.
- Now, add the cooked rice and mix it well. Boil it for few minutes on a low flame.
- At last, add the ghee and mix it well. When it is ready, transfer it to a serving bowl and garnish it with chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve this hot sambar Sadam with mango pickle (thokku), papad and salad.
