Paruppu Thogayal or Thuvaiyal recipe is one of an authentic Tamil Brahmin recipe popular among the people from Tamil Nadu. This recipe is usually served as a side dish along with jeera rasam and vegetable dishes which in turn is one of the famous lunch combinations in these parts. Paruppu Thogayal or dal chutney is a simple recipe which can be made in two ways, first one is without the use of grated coconut and the second ones contain grated coconut as one of the ingredients. Toor dal, red chillies, black pepper, garlic and Asafoetida are the important ingredients used in this recipe. The presence of 1 or 2 dried red chillies and black pepper provides a hot spicy flavour. The taste of garlic pods combines well with the asafoetida powder and provides a unique flavour.   • ½ cup of Toor dal / Tuvaram Paruppu
  • 2-3 dried Red chillies
  • 1 Garlic clove
  • ½ teaspoon of Black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of oil
  • Salt for the taste
  • Water as per the requirement

Method of preparation of Paruppu Thogayal or Thuvaiyal recipe
  • Heat some oil in a deep frying pan and add the Toor dal.
  • Use a medium –low flame and roast it to a golden brown texture.
  • Transfer it to a bowl and keep it aside for cooling.
  • Now, add the red chillies and black pepper to the same pan and roast it for few seconds.
  • Remove it from the pan and keep it aside.
  • Now, take a blender and add the roasted Toor dal, dried red chillies and black pepper.
  • Also, add the garlic cloves and some salt for the taste.
  • Grind it to a fine powder and add some water.
  • Grind it again to form a thick chutney recipe.
  • Serve it as a side dish for rice, along with jeera rasam and vegetable dishes.
